Getting around Nananu-i-ra Island
In & Around Nananu-i-Ra
There are no roads on the island so the way to get around is by boat or by foot. You can hire a boat at any of the small resorts and they will take you around the island. The waters are usually quite calm especially on the southern side of the island near the Viti Levu coast.
Probably the best way to see parts of the island is by foot though it is not possible to access the whole island. The main publicly accessible area is where there is a cluster of smaller backpacking accommodation operators. From here one may walk along the beach facing west, and then a short walk across the slim neck of the island at this point takes you to beautiful Lomanisue Beach. There is also a couple of walks up to good vantage points where one can enjoy views of the ocean, beaches and Viti Levu's coastline. Sunset Point, as its name suggests is great at the end of the day as the sun is setting.
Access to Nananu-i-Ra is by way of a short open boat ride from Ellington Wharf on Viti Levu; the wharf is just a short distance south-east of the Wananavu Beach Resort. The journey takes about 10 exhilarating minutes across the narrow stretch of water between the mainland and Nananu-i-Ra. As your boat slows down and bobs gently as it approaches the sandy beaches of Nananu-i-Ra you will feel the stresses float away like petals on the ocean.
